Christmas at the Museum

The creation and preservation of art play prominent roles in the displays, activities and special events at the John W. Rawlings Heritage Center & Museum. Artwork and photography by both local and nationally-recognized artists are displayed throughout the museum and library.

A valued partner of the Bent County Historical Society, the Bent County Art Guild was formed in 2003. Guild members host art and craft seminars, workshops and classes. They also showcase their own artistic talents in the museum gift shop – the Old Trail Gallery – which features carvings, quilts, paintings, photographs, jewelry and so much more.

Their classes are open to both novice and experienced students and teach a variety of handcrafts while encouraging community involvement and fellowship.  They’ve hosted courses in ceramics, quilting, painting, embroidery and gourd painting among others.

The art guild also hosts a myriad of special events, always with an imaginative theme, creative decorations and fun costumes. Different every time, their annual dinners have featured a speak easy, Mardi Gras celebration and a murder mystery.

Christmas at the museum has games holiday snacks, carol singing, an auction and crafts for the kids.  Santa makes an appearance as well.

Their most notable event is the annual Santa Fe Trail Day Art Show. Held the last Friday of April, in conjunction with the Santa Fe Trail Day celebration, this juried event is open to pros, non-pros and students.  Entry categories include paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and jewelry.

Release your inner creative self and come join the fun!

The Art Guild meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. to plan events, classes and exhibits. For information on meetings and membership, contact Linda Bourne.
